A Brief History of the Great Prayer Festival (Chotrul Monlam Chemo)

ཆོ་འཕྲུལ་སྨོན་ལམ་ཆེན་མོ་ནི་རྗེ་ཙོང་ཁ་པ་ཆེན་པོས་ཕྱི་ལོ་ ༡༤༠༩ ལོར་ལྷ་ས་གཙུག་ལག་ཁང་དུ་ཐོག་མར་བཙུགས་གནང་བ་ཞིག་ཡིན། འདི་ནི་སྟོན་པ་སངས་རྒྱས་ཤཱཀྱ་ཐུབ་པས་དགུང་ལོ་སོ་ལྔའི་སྐབས་མཉན་ཡོད་དུ་མུ་སྟེགས་པའི་སྟོན་པ་དྲུག་ལ་ཆོ་འཕྲུལ་བཅུ་གཉིས་བསྟན་ནས་ཕམ་པར་མཛད་པའི་དུས་ཆེན་དང་བསྟུན་ནས། བོད་ཟླ་དང་པོའི་ཚེས་གཅིག་ནས་བཅོ་ལྔའི་བར་མཆོད་འབུལ་སྨོན་ལམ་གསུང་སྲོལ་གསར་གཏོད་མཛད།

རྗེ་བླ་མས་ཐོག་མར་གསར་འཛུགས་མཛད་སྐབས་དགེ་འདུན་པ་སྟོང་ཕྲག་བརྒལ་བ་འདུས་ཤིང་། དེའི་རྗེས་ནས་ལོ་ལྟར་དགེ་འདུན་འདུས་ཚོགས་ཇེ་མང་དུ་གྱུར་ཏེ་ཕྱི་ལོ་ ༡༥༠༠ ཙམ་ནས་དགེ་འདུན་པ་ཁྲི་ཚོ་བརྒལ་བ་འདུ་འཛོམས་བྱུང་བར་གྲགས། དེ་ནས་རིམ་བཞིན་རྒྱལ་མཆོག་སྐུ་ཕྲེང་རིམ་བྱོན་གྱིས་སྨོན་ལམ་ཆེན་མོའི་སྐབས་ཀྱི་མཛད་སྒོ་རྣམས་སྔར་ལས་རྒྱས་པར་གནང་བ་དང་། ལྷ་ལྡན་སྨོན་ལམ་ཆེན་མོའི་སྐབས་འབྲས་སྤུངས་དང་། སེ་ར། དགའ་ལྡན་བཅས་ཀྱི་དགེ་བཤེས་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་རྟགས་གསལ་གཏོང་བ་དང་། དགེ་འདུན་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་མདོ་སྔགས་ཀྱི་ཆོས་སྤྱོད་ཁག་གསུང་བ། མང་ཚོགས་ཀྱིས་མཆོད་མཇལ་ཞུ་བ་སོགས་ཀྱི་སྲོལ་བཟང་ཆགས། བོད་རབ་བྱུང་བཅུ་པའི་ཆུ་གླང་ (ཕྱི་ལོ་ ༡༦༡༣) ལོ་ནས་ཀུན་གཟིགས་༧པཎ་ཆེན་སྐུ་ཕྲེང་བཞི་པ་བློ་བཟང་ཆོས་ཀྱི་རྒྱལ་མཚན་དཔལ་བཟང་པོས་ལོ་དྲུག་རིང་ལྷ་ལྡན་སྨོན་ལམ་ཆེན་མོའི་ཚོགས་དབུ་མཛད་ཅིང་། དེ་སྐབས་དབུས་གྱུར་གདན་ས་ཆེན་པོ་གསུམ་གྱི་དགེ་བཤེས་མཁས་པ་རྣམས་ནས་ལྷ་ལྡན་སྨོན་ལམ་ཚོགས་དབུས་སུ་སྔ་དྲོ་ཚད་མ་རྣམ་འགྲེལ་དང་། ཉིན་གུང་དབུ་ཕར་གཉིས། དགོང་དྲོ་འདུལ་མཛོད་བཅས་གཞུང་ཆེན་པོ་ཏི་ལྔའི་དམ་བཅའ་བཞག་སྟེ་ལྷ་ལྡན་རབ་འབྱམས་སྨྲ་བའི་ (དགེ་བཤེས་ལྷ་རམས་པ།) མཚན་གནས་གནང་སྲོལ་གྱི་ལམ་ལུགས་(ཕྱི་ལོ་ ༡༦༡༤ ལོར་) གསར་གཏོད་མཛད། 

སྤྱི་ཚོགས་ཀྱི་འགྱུར་བགྲོས་དང་བསྟུན་ནས་ཆོ་འཕྲུལ་སྨོན་ལམ་ཚོགས་རྒྱུར་ཡང་ཉམས་རྒུད་དང་དར་རྒྱས་ཀྱི་འཕེལ་རིམ་གང་ཙམ་བྱུང་ཡོད། གང་ལྟར་དུས་རབས་ཉི་ཤུ་པའི་དཀྱིལ་ཙམ་བར་ལྷ་སར་ཆོ་འཕྲུལ་སྨོན་ལམ་ཆེན་མོ་ཚོགས་མུས་ཡིན་ཞིང་། ༡༩༥༩ ལོའི་རྗེས་སྤྱི་ནོར་༧གོང་ས་༧སྐྱབས་མགོན་ཆེན་པོ་མཆོག་གི་ཐུགས་རྗེ་བཀའ་དྲིན་འོག་རྒྱ་གར་དུ་བཙན་བྱོལ་དུ་ཕེབས་པའི་བླ་སྤྲུལ་དགེ་འདུན་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་རྒྱ་གར་དང་། བལ་ཡུལ། འབྲུག་ཡུལ་སོགས་སུ་གཞི་རྒྱ་ཆེ་བའི་ཆོ་འཕྲུལ་སྨོན་ལམ་གསར་འཛུགས་གནང་བ་དང་། དེང་སྐབས་འཛམ་གླིང་ཡུལ་གྲུ་མང་པོར་ཁྱབ་སྟེ་ལོ་ལྟར་གཟབ་རྒྱས་ངང་སྲུང་བརྩི་ཞུ་བཞིན་ཡོད།

The Great Prayer Festival (Monlam Chenmo) was first established by Je Tsongkhapa in 1409 at the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa. This festival commemorates Buddha Shakyamuni's victory over six rival teachers at Shravasti, and consists of prayers and offerings held from the first to the fifteenth day of the first Tibetan month.

Under the guidance of successive Dalai Lamas, a tradition developed where Geshe scholars from the three great monasteries (Drepung, Sera, and Ganden) would engage in philosophical debates, monks would perform sutra and tantra rituals, and the public would make offerings and pilgrimages. In 1614, the Fourth Panchen Lama established the system of conferring the Geshe Lharampa degree (the highest academic degree in Tibetan Buddhism) during the festival, which involved scholarly examinations on the five major Buddhist philosophical texts.

The Great Prayer Festival continued in Lhasa until the mid-twentieth century. After 1959, it was re-established in India, Nepal, Bhutan, and other countries, and today, the tradition continues to be celebrated annually throughout many parts of the world.
